Cooling Options
Heatsink & Fans
There are two heat sinks, the standard, and High-Performance heat sink. There is also a Standard Fan and a Gold Fan. These Heat Sinks and Fans will change based on Processor TDP and Configuration. Up to 7 hot-swappable fans
- STD HSK is required for CPU Base TDP <=150W
- HPR HSK is required for CPU Base TDP >150W
- STD Fan is required for CPU Base TDP<=205W
- HPR Gold (VHP) Fan is required for CPU Base TDP>205W
The “Thermal Solution Configuration” in the manual below will provide more details about the cooling of the system.
Memory Population Rules
To ensure optimal performance of your system, observe the following general guidelines when configuring your system memory. If your system's memory configuration fails to observe these guidelines, your system might not boot, stop responding during memory configuration, or operate with reduced memory.
Memory Rules
- Maximum 8 DIMMs per processor and 16 DIMMs in total.
- Supports DDR5 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) up to 4800 MT/s.
- All DIMMs must be DDR5.
- Memory mixing is not supported for different DIMM capacities.

Expansion Slots
There are 6 Riser Configurations, each one being a little different than the last. Some risers provide PCIe Gen 5 Slots while most provide PCIe Gen 4 slots. Configuration 1 is the only config that allows all three PCIe slots to be accessible. Configuration 4 is the only config to support rear drives and a PCIe slot. Not all PCIe configs provide PCIe x16 slots.
-
1 CPU Configuration: Up to 2 PCIe slots (1 x16 Gen4 + 1 x8 Gen5)
-
2 CPU configuration: Up to 3 PCIe Gen4 slots (1 x16 Gen4 + 2 x8 Gen4) or up to 2 PCIe Gen5 slots (1 x16 Gen5 + 1 x8 Gen5)

Networking & Storage Adapters
You have two options for networking support that can be used at the same time. The OCP Mezz 3.0 (supported by x8 PCIe 4.0 lanes), and the LOM 2x 1GB ports. These two networking options help free up the 3 limited PCIe slots on the 1U Rack server. The OCP card can handle up to 25GbE cards with up to 4 ports
Networking Options:
-
LOM: BCM5720 LAN controller with 2x 1GB ports
-
OCP Port Type: BT/SFP/SFP+/SFP28/SFP56
-
OCP Max Ports: 4
-
OCP Max Port Speed: 25GbE
Storage Controllers
The Gen 16 Dell Server supports the PERC 11 and PERC 12 Cards. It’s recommended to save a PCIe slot by adding fPERC’s to the system for RAID control. Another thing standard on the Gen 16 systems is the ability to install a BOOT Device. The BOSS-N1 holds 2xM.2 SSD drives and has its own dedicated riser and riser slot. The BOSS-N1 can hold the boot or the Hypervisor. With 2 4880GB or 960GB cards installed, you'll have plenty of room for storage.
