The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11 is a 2U dual-processor (2P) server delivering strong compute performance, faster data transfer, and expanded memory depth at full 2P capability. Powered by 4th and 5th Generation AMD EPYC 9004 and 9005 Series processors with up to 160 cores, it offers increased memory bandwidth, high-speed PCIe Gen5 I/O, enhanced GPU support, and EDSFF storage — making it a standout, accelerator-optimized enterprise server solution.
HPE DL385 Gen11 Chassis Options
GPU - P54198-B21
To support Double Wide or Single Wide GPUs, the DL385 Gen11 GPU CTO Server must be selected. GPUs cannot be supported in rear PCIe slots for DL385 Gen11.
4x DW or 8x SW GPUs Supported
HPE DL385 Gen11 Backplane Options
8LFF CTO (P53925-B21)
8 LFF Notes
- The 8 LFF Chassis also supports 2 SFF Stacking Drives (P55091-B21)
- The 4 LFF rear drive box will consume space for the primary, secondary and tertiary risers.
- The 12 LFF configuration needs to be built up with 8LFF chassis and one 4LFF drive cage
- CPU TDP above 300W then Mid Cage cannot be selected
- HPE DL385 G11 x16 Prim FIO Riser LFF Rear (P55098-B21) selectable when rear 4LFF SAS/SATA cage kit (P55088-B21) is configured.
8SFF CTO (P53921-B21)
8 SFF Notes
- If Front 8SFF Drive cage is selected quantity above one then SFF Backplane Power Cable Kit must be selected.
- U.3 x1 and U.3 x4 drive cages can mix.
- 3x 8 SFF drive cages can be used to build up a 24 SFF configuration.
- The Universal Media Bay (P57857-B21) can only be populated in Box 1.
- CPU TDP above 300W then Mid Cage cannot be selected
GPU CTO (P54198-B21)
HPE DL385 Gen11 Heatsink
TDP above 240W and below 300W
Mid tray installed, and Less than 300w
Cooling Notes
- Above 300W then Mid Cage cannot be selected
- When Maximum Performance 2U Heat Sink Kit is selected, Hi-Perf Air Baffle Kit is required.
- When Standard or Performance 2U Heat Sink Kit is selected, Standard/Perf Air Baffle Kit is required.
- NOTE: Just the DLC; you still need to riser and NS204u-i if desired.
- Seven (7) performance fan kits are required.
- 450mm Quick Disconnect for GPU-optimized server.
- 55cm Quick Disconnect for non-GPU-optimized configuration
HPE DL385 Gen11 Fan Options
- Air Baffles cannot be configured if mid cages are configured.
- When Standard or Performance 2U Heat Sink Kit is selected, Standard/Perf Air Baffle Kit is required.
- When Maximum Performance 2U Heat Sink Kit is selected, Hi-Perf Air Baffle Kit is required
- If DLC Module is selected then Performance Fan kit must be selected.
- supports up to 6 fans with fan redundancy built in
- 256 GB DIMM requires quantity of six of Performance Fans
BOOT Device
NS204i-u Boot Device
The NS204i-U functions as a dedicated boot device module rather than a PCIe card, with externally accessible M.2 drives. It ships with 2x 480GB M.2 NVMe SSDs and supports RAID 1. Three mounting locations are available for the module, though PCIe slot availability may be reduced depending on placement.
- Positioning in the tertiary location above the power supplies means tertiary risers are not supported.
- Placement in secondary Slot 4 means Slot 4 and Slot 5 of the secondary riser cage are unavailable.
- Selecting the low-profile secondary riser places the module below the 4LFF rear drive cage, with only one riser supported in that secondary location.

MR vs SR — What's the Difference?
The MR (MegaRAID) and SR (SmartRAID) controller series use different configuration tools and cannot be mixed as internal controllers in the same server. Both series support SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives when paired with a tri-mode U.3 backplane, allowing mixed-drive configurations. The server has no embedded software RAID support — direct-attached SATA drives operate in AHCI mode only, so a hardware storage controller is required for any RAID functionality.
Choosing Between MR and SR
- Need OCP slot deployment → MR type-o only
- Simple RAID, no cache needed → MR216i-o or MR216i-p
- Need cache, moderate drive count → MR408i-o or MR416i-o/p
- Maximum drive count or throughput → SR932i-p
- External SAS/SATA storage → E208e-p (Gen10, type-p, external only)
OCP - Dual Slots
The OCP slots are not the same.
Slot 21 does not have any connection to the drives; this is why Slot 22 supports a Type-O Storage controller.
When installing a single OCP NIC, install it in Slot 21.
