Configuration Rules and limitations
Before we start, let me show you some odd rules that will change the way you configure the server.
- Single CPU support is there only for No Riser Configruations
- In a "No riser" Configuration. The System cannot support the same type of 2.5" drive in front and rear storage (4 x 2.5") when using 2.5" in a 3.5" Carrier.
- Rear Storage has a Drive Capacity limit of 7.68TB
- The PERC H965e is restricted to slot 3 in configuration 2
- GPUs are supported in Configuration 3 Only
- Non-populated DIMMs must have a blank in Configuration 3.
- For more details about these rules and limitations, please read the manual below.
Drive Configuration Options:
Chassis Options:
- (2) 12x 3.5" (12 + 12)
- (2) 12x 3.5" with rear 4x 3.5" SAS/SATA
- (2) 12x 3.5" with rear 2x U.2 NVMe
- (2) 12x 3.5" with rear 4x E3.S NVMe
- The Dell SAS Expander Card for the R760XD2 supports the Storage controllers H755 and the HBA355i. The SAS Expander along with those Storage controllers allows the system to support up to 50 SAS Drives at up to 12 Gb/s.
Processor, Heatsink & Fans
Processor
The following lists the features and functions that are in the upcoming 4th Generation Intel® Xeon Scalable Processor offering:
- Faster UPI with up to four Intel Ultra Path Interconnect (Intel UPI) at up to 16 GT/s, increasing multi-socket bandwidth.
- More, faster I/O with PCI Express 5 and up to 80 lanes (per socket)
- Enhanced Memory Performance with DDR5 support and memory speed up to 4800 MT/s in one DIMM per channel (1DPC) and 4400 MT/s in two DIMM per channel (2DPC)
- New built-in accelerators for data analytics, networking, storage, crypto, and data compression
Heatsink & Fans
This server is limited to lower-power CPU options, which is why it uses only the Standard 2U heat sink — no high-performance variant is offered. Fan configuration follows the same rule, with a single standard option covering all builds.
Fan configuration on the PowerEdge R760xd2 rack server is fixed at 6x Standard hot-swap fans, with no alternate options offered. Ambient temperature limits vary by build, so check the "Thermal Restrictions Matrix" in the manual below for specifics.
Memory Options
A dual-CPU build opens up 16 DDR5 DIMM slots on this server, topping out at 1TB of RDIMM capacity with speeds reaching 4800 MT/s. Only registered ECC DDR5 DIMMs are compatible.

GPU / Expansion Slot Options
Five low-profile PCIe slots sit on the system board of the Dell PowerEdge R760xd2, with slot 5 — positioned nearest the PSU — reserved for a PERC card. A single riser, available in full-length or half-length variants, mounts in the center of the chassis above the OCP card, adding either two half-length or two full-length slots. Installing this riser enables support for either 1x double-wide GPU or 2x single-wide GPUs.
Installing a rear drive cage reduces available PCIe capacity — for instance, adding the 4x 3.5" rear drive cage leaves just 3 accessible PCIe slots, one of which is the dedicated PERC slot (slot 5). See the image above or the manual below for further details.
GPU Options
Up to 2 x 75 W SW, 1 x 75 W SW + 1 x 150 W SW or 1 x 180 W DW
GPU and FPGA cards on this system call for a 2U L-type heat sink and GPU shroud. With the riser installed, the system can accommodate up to 3 GPUs total — a double-wide GPU in the riser plus a single-wide GPU in each of slots 1 and 4. This represents just one possible GPU layout; additional configurations are covered in the manuals below.
Networking Adapters LOM/OCP
Networking on the Dell PowerEdge R760xd2 comes down to 2 options, each with its own dedicated slot that stays independent of PCIe allocation. That's a real advantage given how rear drive installation can shrink available PCIe slots from 5 down to 2.
LOM/OCP 3.0
Network expansion on the R760xd2 comes via an optional 2x 1GbE LOM slot or an optional OCP 3.0 x8 slot. The OCP option delivers 4 ports capable of reaching up to 100Gb/s combined (4x 25Gb/s each).
Storage Controllers Options
Storage Controllers
Among Dell's RAID controller lineup is the Adapter PERC solution, which installs a base RAID hardware controller in PCIe slot 5 — a slot reserved exclusively for the PERC or HBA.
Note: PERC interposer cable has to be installed as PCIe Slot 5 to install adapter PERC on the system.
SAS Expander
Scaling past 16 drives on a single controller requires the SAS Expander, which mounts in its own dedicated slot on the system board near the power supplies. See the Controller Specs below for further detail.
