Experience ultimate flexibility with Dell’s shortest depth edge server
Dell Technology’s shortest-depth edge server
The new Dell PowerEdge XR4000 is a 2U server with an innovative sled-based design. Dell’s shortest depth server to date is purpose-built for the edge; delivering high-performance compute and ultimate deployment flexibility in two new chassis form factors.Process and analyze data at the point of capture. Designed for workloads at the Edge including virtual desktop integration (VDI), Machine vision, Video surveillance, vSAN/VM, Point-of-sale and Data compression.
High-density, short-depth server designed and optimized for the edge
The PowerEdge XR4000, powered by Intel® Xeon® D processors, enables scalability and flexibility with a sled-based architecture and multiple mounting options.
- Expand as needed with options for 1U or 2U compute sleds and up to 4 servers in single 2U chassis
- Flexible mounting options: rack or wall-mountable chassis
- Operate in environments outside of traditional data centers with -5 to 55c operating temperatures
- Ideal for analytics, AI inferencing, IoT, vSAN, MEC, point of sale
Purpose built for the edge
- Can operate in temp ranges from -5C to 55C and is rated to MIL 810H and NEBS Level 3
- Gain ultimate deployment flexibility with optional ‘stackable’ and ‘rackable’ chassis with options to mount on walls or place on shelves when space is at a premium
- Withstand dusty and harsh environments while providing extra physical security with an optional lockable intelligent filtered bezel
New Nano Server
- Create a self-contained 2-node VM cluster in a footprint not much larger than a shoebox with dell Nano Witness Server included in-chassis
- Rackable chassis supports up to 4 separate server nodes in a single 2U chassis
- Storage up to 12 x M.2 NVMe for total capacity of 45Tb per sled
Multi-node design
- Uses Intel® Xeon D® with up to 20 cores per node for ultimate edge performance
- Reduce service complexity with a sled-based chassis that allows for a ‘pull replace-repair’ model
- Scale when you need it by adding sleds as your operation demands grow.
Dell PowerEdge XR4000 Chassis Options
This Server Series has 2 Chassis options, 2 Node options, and a special Witness Sled that can be installed in any configuration.
Node Options:
Heatsink & Fans
The airflow direction will be chosen when selecting the chassis. All Nodes/Sleds will come automatically with that flow direction.
XR4000r: Normal airflow (NAF) and Reverse airflow (RAF)
XR4000z: Reverse airflow (RAF) only.

The XR4520c Sled is the only sled that can install the Riser Kit (R1C). That makes the XR4520c the only system to support up to two 150W single-width GPUs or one 250W double-width GPU.
The XR4520c also supports the installation of Two 4x M.2 NVMe SSDs AIC.
It's also the only server to expand the networking capabilities if you desire to install another NIC.
Read below for more details.
Networking
The XR4510c & XR4520c Sleds
- 10GbE x 4 (max 50Gb)
For processors with up to 8 cores.
- 25GbE x 4 (max 100Gb)
For processors with 12-20 cores or more.
Only the 2U XR4520c can support an extra NIC on the Riser Kit R1C.
Dell Poweredge XR4000w Witness Sled
2x 1 GbE (intel I210) LOM
Storage
XR4510c & XR4520c:
4x M.2 NVMe SSDs (M.2 2280 and M.2 22110) on M.2 riser module
XR4520c Only:
When Riser 1C is installed you have two extra PCIe slots. Each slot can hold another 4x M.2 NVMe SSDs AIC. For a total of 8 extra M.2 NVMe SSDs.
XR4000w Only:
1 x M.2 SSD of 960 GB (2280) NVMe SSD Module.
Power Supply Units (PSU)
The system supports up to 2 PSUs per server (not node/sled). You will choose the Airflow for the sleds at the top of the CTO. All other components will come with the correct airflow desired for the configuration.
XR4000r: Normal airflow (NAF) and Reverse airflow (RAF).
XR4000z: Reverse airflow (RAF) only.
(RAF - Blue)
RAF design is also called Reverse Airflow (RAF). RAF pulls air into the I/O side and exhausts to the side of the chassis without I/O. This allows for cold-aisle serviceability.
(NAF - Red or Black)
NAF design is also called Normal Airflow (NAF.) NAF pulls air into the non-I/O side and exhausts to the side of the chassis with I/O. This is the 'standard' way most data center servers are configured for hot-aisle serviceability.
