The Dell PowerEdge R860 supports 4 processors in a 2U rack server by stacking them via a PEM (Processor Expansion Module) board, mounted directly above the first two CPUs. This second board houses 2 additional processors and 32 DIMMs, enabling a highly space-efficient design that delivers strong compute density and flexible configuration options for enterprise data centers.
R860 available internal storage configurations:
There is no 16 Drive Backplane. The 16x 2.5" consists of (2) 8x 2.5" SAS/SATA backplanes or (2) of the 8x 2.5" NVMe backplanes. These can be mixed in a single configuration with two PERCs installed to control each set of drives.
The R860 has only a few backplanes that can create all the configurations below.

Memory:
The Dell PowerEdge R860 is available in 2-socket or 4-socket configurations. Adding the PEM (Processor Expansion Module) expands memory capacity to all 64 DIMM slots, compared to up to 32 DIMMs in the standard 2-socket setup. See the manual for full memory guidelines and limitations.

Networking:
The Dell PowerEdge R860 supports up to two 10/100/1000 Mbps Network Interface Controller (NIC) ports, available via the embedded LAN on Motherboard (LOM) and optional Open Compute Project (OCP) cards.
NOTE: The system allows either LOM card or an OCP card or both to be installed in the system.

PCIe Expansion Options:
The Dell PowerEdge R860 rack server supports up to 8 PCIe slots, with riser options available in Gen 4 or Gen 5 configurations. Certain risers require all 4 sockets to be populated via the PEM (Processor Expansion Module) for support.
