Nikon ZR Cinema Camera (Body Only)
The Limitless Cinematic Powerhouse, Born from RED and Nikon
For decades, achieving the legendary "RED Look" meant renting or purchasing massive, highly complex, and prohibitively expensive digital cinema rigs. With the introduction of the Nikon ZR, the landscape of independent filmmaking has been permanently altered. Serving as the groundbreaking debut of the Z Cinema series, the ZR represents the ultimate synergy following Nikon's acquisition of RED Digital Cinema. It takes the acclaimed 24.5-megapixel full-frame sensor and deep-learning autofocus of the Z-system and fuses it seamlessly with RED’s world-renowned color science and RAW compression technology.
Designed specifically for solo filmmakers, documentarians, and high-end content creators, this ultra-compact cinema camera delivers an unprecedented feature set. It captures internal 12-bit 6K RAW video at up to 60 frames per second, features an integrated 32-bit float audio system, and sports a massive, impossibly bright 4-inch DCI-P3 monitor—effectively eliminating the need to rig the camera with expensive external recorders, audio interfaces, and monitors. It is a complete, uncompromised cinema studio that fits in the palm of your hand.
Why You'll Love This Camera
-
The RED Color Science Advantage: The camera introduces the brand new R3D NE file format—a highly optimized 12-bit RAW codec that leverages RED's iconic color science. It unlocks the REDWideGamutRGB color space and the Log3G10 curve, delivering 15+ stops of dynamic range and ensuring your footage matches perfectly with traditional RED cinema cameras in post-production.
-
Internal 6K RAW & High-Speed 4K: Leave the external recorders at home. The ZR captures internal 6K video at up to 60p in R3D NE or Nikon N-RAW. It also shoots stunning, oversampled 4K video at up to 120 fps for silky-smooth cinematic slow motion, alongside industry-standard ProRes RAW HQ and 10-bit H.265 options.
-
Massive 4-Inch 1000-Nit Monitor: Composing shots in direct sunlight is no longer a guessing game. The ZR features a class-leading, fully articulating 4.0-inch touchscreen LCD. Boasting 3.07 million dots of resolution, DCI-P3 color accuracy, and a blinding 1000 nits of brightness, it effectively replaces the need to mount a bulky external field monitor to your rig.
-
Integrated 32-Bit Float Audio: Unpredictable audio levels will never ruin a take again. The ZR is the world's first interchangeable lens camera to capture 32-bit float audio internally via its 3.5mm mic jack or the built-in stereo microphone. This massive dynamic range guarantees your audio will never clip, allowing you to completely ignore gain adjustments while filming.
-
Deep-Learning AI Autofocus: Inheriting Nikon's renowned 3D Tracking, the camera automatically detects and tenaciously locks onto the eyes, faces, and bodies of people, birds, dogs, cats, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trains, and airplanes.
-
Dual Base ISO: Whether shooting in RED Log3G10 or Nikon N-Log, the sensor utilizes a Dual Base ISO architecture (ISO 800 and ISO 6400). This allows you to shoot incredibly clean, low-noise footage in both brightly lit exteriors and pitch-black interiors.
-
Custom In-Camera LUTs: Load up to 10 custom 3D LUTs (.cube files) directly into the camera. You can preview your final, color-graded look in real-time on the built-in monitor, or "bake" the look directly into the footage for lightning-fast turnarounds.

Things to Note
To achieve its incredibly streamlined, video-centric form factor and accommodate the massive 4-inch rear screen, the Nikon ZR does not feature an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). You must compose all of your shots exclusively using the rear LCD monitor. While the screen is remarkably bright, photographers accustomed to holding a camera to their eye will need to adapt their shooting style.
Secondly, you must be prepared to invest in high-end memory. To capture the massive data rates of 6K 60p RAW video, you absolutely must use CFexpress Type B memory cards in Slot 1. Slot 2 is only a microSD slot, which is useful for proxy recording or firmware updates, but is far too slow for high-resolution RAW video.
Third, a major pain point for dedicated videographers is the camera's use of a fragile micro-HDMI port rather than a full-size HDMI port. If you plan to frequently use external wireless transmitters or output to a larger director's monitor, purchasing a dedicated camera cage with a secure HDMI cable clamp is highly recommended to prevent port damage.
Finally, while the ZR features internal cooling mechanisms and a durable magnesium alloy body, continuous recording limits do apply. The maximum recording time is roughly 125 minutes (when operated in ambient temperatures of 77°F / 25°C, using an external USB-C power source, with the "Auto Temperature Cutoff" set to High).
